Two differences between the book and the movie are the setting and the era.  The novel takes place in 1952, and the setting is Cleveland, Ohio, rather than New York City.  Instead of losing $80 in twenties, Verna (rather than Gertrude) loses $30 in fives.   I still don't comprehend how $80 would cover Christmas presents for all your grand kids, but maybe I overspend.
