Which Hallmark "Godwink" Movie Is Your Favorite? Vote!

What Are Godwinks?

Hallmark fans love movies that are inspired by real-life stories, and Hallmark has delivered three Godwink movies based upon the true tales penned in books by SQuire Rushnell and Louse DuArt.

What are Godwinks?

Godwinks are defined as a coincidence that isn't a coincidence, but is thought to be of divine origin.  The term was first coined by Rushnell when writing his first book, When God Winks.   He substituted the word "Godwink" for "coincidence" throughout his manuscript, and it fit.  Today, it is used as a synonym for "answered prayer."

If you've ever thought to yourself, "What are the odds of THAT happening?" then you've undoubtedly experienced a Godwink!

Why does Rushnell write about Godwinks?  He shares his mission:  "To lift the spirits of our readers and viewers with powerful and true-life Godwink stories, providing hope and encouragement."

Hope is something we all need!

A Godwink Christmas

The first Hallmark Godwink movie, A Godwink Christmas, was released in 2018 and starred one of Hallmark's most beloved couplings (though there are many!), Kimberley Sustad and Paul Campbell, along with the extra special star power of Kathie Lee Gifford.

Paul Campbell and Kimberley Sustad star in A Godwink Christmas in 2018

Sustad plays Paula, a woman who recently and reluctantly gets engaged.  Her Aunt Jane, played by Gifford, invites her to her Nantucket home.  While visiting nearby Martha's Vineyard, Paula meets Gery, an inn owner portrayed by Campbell, and she develops feelings for him as they spend time together doing Christmas festivities.  Even though Paula still moves forward with her engagement, it takes a reminder from Aunt Jane that we sometimes receive Godwinks to help us know what direction to take.  The realization changes Paula's course.

A Godwink Christmas:  Meant for Love

My favorite Godwink story is the one released in 2019, A Godwink Christmas: Meant for Love, the tale of Jack and Alice meeting at wedding 500 miles out of town.  There are multiple Godwinks that bring and keep these two together.

We find out later that Jack's Middle Eastern uncle had been on the same boat as Alice's Italian uncle and father, all bound for America.  They lost track of each other for 50 years, but then rekindle their friendship when Jack and Alice get together.

Alice learns she has multiple sclerosis and doesn't want Jack losing another loved one--he's already lost his younger brother to brain cancer and his parents in an automobile accident.   Jack persists.  He loves Alice, and he doesn't let her disease stand in the way.  He also inspires her to pursue her dream of leaving the family retail store to become a therapist.

Cindy Busby and Benjamin Hollingsworth bring this true story to life onscreen, along with Kathie Lee Gifford again, playing Alice's mom (who constantly busts into her apartment to snoop!).

With so many unlikely events and happenstances woven throughout this story, you would be hard-pressed to convince anyone they are mere "coincidences."  God is clearly at work in our lives today.

Of the three Godwink movies, this one definitely wins first prize for being the biggest tear-jerker!  If you love it too, check out this post on the movie--you'll find a movie quiz there, so see how you do.

A Godwink Christmas:  Second Chance, First Love

The third Godwink installment was released in 2020, A Godwink Christmas:  Second Chance, First Love, starring Brooke D'Orsay and Sam Page.

Kathie Lee Gifford's presence was noticeably absent.  Gifford served as the movie's executive producer, but due to pandemic restrictions, she was unable to assume a role in the movie.

The major Godwink transpiring in this movie involves a divorced man who moves home from Hawaii with his two sons.  He ends up in traffic next to his high school sweetheart, and the two keep bumping into each other everywhere they go.  When Pat (Page) is offered a job in another city, Margie's (D'Orsay) company promotes her, and her new position requires her to move to the same city as Pat--Seattle.

Brooke D'Orsay and Sam Page bring to life the true story of Pat and Margie in 2020's A Godwink Christmas:  Second Chance, First Love

After the inspiring and resounding successes of the first two Godwink movies, this one is a disappointment.  Most Hallmark movies are heavy-laden with contrived coincidences anyway, so this movie follows the usual formula.  Two people keep crossing paths and end up in the same city in the end.  It happens in nearly every non-Godwink movie, so the divine intervention in this one isn't pronounced.  The circumstances surrounding Pat and Margie's reunion aren't unique or unusual.  Hallmark repeatedly brings past loves together for second chances.  The "Godwink" in this movie is diluted by the typical Hallmark brand, which detracts from the depth of the story we come to expect in Godwink movies.

Despite A Godwink Christmas: Second Chance, First Love being another feel-good Hallmark movie, it doesn't tug on the heart strings or tear ducts with inspirational Godwinks--it's just too generic.  If you'd like to read the real-life story the movie is based upon, you can find it here.
