Do You Have a Boss Like Emma's?

Emma starts a new job in Denver as an executive assistant for Daily Lifestyle Magazine, even though she's overqualified for the position and would shine as a staff writer.

Valerie, Emma's boss, is a critical tyrant.  She's cool, aloof, and difficult to please.  When the pressure increases for Valerie to produce a cover story that will be a page-turner, she becomes desperate.

Emma suggests doing a story about a Christmas miracle.  The Internet is filled with inspiring stories, so why not find a similar heart-warming tale from their own city to publish?

Valerie's boss, Miss Hennessy, loves the concept, so Valerie keeps the cover story under wraps from her team so Emma won't realize she swiped her idea.

Have you ever had a boss who stole your thunder?

You do all the work, he or she takes all the credit?  It happens all the time.  The business world trains people to be self-promoting to climb the corporate ladder, but Emma is a person of character and integrity.

Valerie's cover story is about a couple who find a signed, first edition of Charles Dickens's novel, A Christmas Carol under the floor boards of their home.  They plan to sell the book and donate the money to a literacy program that is struggling to survive in the city.  Turns out, their story is a hoax.  They simply want publicity to launch the wife's writing career.

Emma could have smugly watched her boss get fired for this gross oversight.  After all, Valerie deserves it for what she did.  Emma could seize the moment to advance herself, but she doesn't.

Instead, Emma presents her own beautifully written story about another Christmas miracle, saves Valerie's rear end, and gives her another chance to do the right thing.  This time around, Valerie credits Emma for her story and Marcus for his photography layout.  Emma earns the opportunity to write for the magazine, and everyone is happy.

Would you have shown Valerie the same mercy Emma did?

In Hallmark land, the "villain" apologizes, repents, and changes his or her attitude.  In the real world, it rarely works that way.  Narcissistic bosses continue hogging the spotlight and squelching anyone who might outshine them.

Still, Emma's example is a good one--showing mercy and kindness rather than exacting revenge keeps a person's heart in the right place, which opens the door for good things to happen.  You reap what you sow.

Putting Others First

Emma wants a chance to prove herself, and her journalistic gut leads her to Santa Dean--a man who plays music in the park and donates his tips to charity.

As Emma digs deeper, she learns the man is really Dean Wannamaker, a famous musician from the Wannamaker Trio.  Santa Dean dissolved the group over a dozen years prior and lost contact with its members.  His career separated him from his daughter, Cissy, so often that she grew to resent him and severed all ties.  It broke his heart, leading him to abandon the Trio.

Initially, Emma's interest in Santa Dean is about breaking the story, but as she meets Cissy and another member of the Trio, her heart gets involved.

Emma is "instrumental" in reuniting the Wannamaker Trio and organizing a concert in the park in the hopes Cissy will come to see her father perform.

Emma does things for the right reasons and reminds viewers you can achieve your goals without tramping on people in the process.

Cissy forgives her father.  A member of the Trio, who has every right to be angry, tells Santa Dean the past is water under the bridge.

There is power in forgiveness.

Is there someone in your life you need to forgive?  Or, are you are the one who needs to seek forgiveness?

Too often, families are torn apart by offense or wounded emotions.  Rehashing the past keeps the wound open when forgiveness is the balm for healing and restoring relationships.

Saddest Part of the Movie

Emma wants Tyler to have a chance to make friends over break so he will already know some kids when he starts going to his new school.  She enrolls him in Winter Camp, but he's very shy and doesn't like going.

When Emma peeks in on him on her break, she finds him sitting alone.  His shyness inhibits him from joining in with the others.

Did your heart break a little to see him sitting alone in class?  Mine did.  Everyone wants their kids to have nice friends and fit in with the right crowd.

Marcus is instrumental in helping Tyler overcome his fears, and he makes friends in no time.  Whew!

This Movie Is Underappreciated

Not much has been said about this charming movie in the Hallmark circles I visit, leading me to believe it isn't getting the attention it deserves.

Emma is the embodiment of the Christmas Spirit, and her story is an inspiration to all.
